MASTER OF THEOLOGY

Program of Study

This is a second cycle program, leading to the degree of MTh with specialist pathways in Biblical Studies or in Missions. The Biblical Studies pathway is designed to stimulate reflection on the use of the Bible in theology by crossing the conventional disciplinary boundaries between biblical exegesis and biblical theology applied in contemporary church environment. The Missions pathway also stimulates reflection on the use of the Bible in theology by crossing the conventional disciplinary boundaries between biblical exegesis but it is also designed to stimulate creative reflection on the cultural changes now sweeping through the modern society and to equip church leaders and others to develop effective missions strategies through which the church might redefine its purposes in this context. The degree offers core courses through which the student develops existing expertise in the major fields of biblical exposition, theology, and missions.

The program combines the broad theological formation with the skill of making theological research in the light of the contemporary religious environment. The students preparing themselves to become Bible teachers, exegetes or writers of theological literature are provided with expertise in either Old Testament or New Testament. The Biblical and theological research abilities of the student are demonstrated in the Dissertation writing.

Assessment
Teaching and Learning Strategies

The overall strategy for teaching and learning is to provide an optimum combination of theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding, using the resources available.
The knowledge and understanding outcomes as well as the subject-specific practical profession skills are acquired through seminar driven courses aimed at further developing the students' previous learning experience. The consolidation of their previous knowledge and the acquisition of independence in the use of primary and secondary sources are achieved through independent evaluation of a greater range of source material reflected in written work. The skill to gather, analyze, assess, synthesize and discuss primary and secondary literature is acquired progressively as written work is encouraged to become increasingly more independent. The skill for a vision of the future of the field is imparted constantly, by showing students that the curriculum is only a sample, and the beginning of lifetime study. Effective communication is taught and encouraged constantly through written submissions, participation in class discussion, or more formal presentations. Self-awareness, self-confidence, maturity and professionalism is a skill which is not taught as such, but it is acquired and encouraged. In individual courses IT further development of IT skills is fostered through course web pages and reference to specific web-based research sources.
Assessment Philosophy
The R.B.U. firmly believes that assessment can best help the student when it is seen as an essential part of the learning process and is clearly tied to learning outcomes. Students' skill for effective communication is assessed primarily through formative comment and encouragement, though marks will be deducted for careless or poorly written submissions. The skill to gather, analyze, assess, synthesize and discuss primary data and secondary literature is assessed as an outcome in its contribution to written work, and formatively in assessment of contribution to discussion. The skill of working with others collaboratively with humanity and sympathy is assessed primarily through formative assessment and encouragement by the tutor, and encouragement to reflect on each other's contributions. Self-awareness, self- confidence, maturity and professionalism is fostered through encouragement and formative comment. The use of IT with confidence is assessed as an outcome in its contribution to written work. It is encouraged formatively in tutorial contact. Competence and familiarity with packages are monitored. Discipline in self-organization and the ability to undertake independent study and research is assessed through formative comment on the process and encouragement to engage in self-evaluation.
